Start A Library Project Crafts For Fair Exchange
African Communities Empowerment Network

S.E.E.D.S. actually began as an ad hoc summer project, when a group of African ancestry educators mobilized to share modest quantities of books and school supplies with villagers in rural Ghana. Years later, we have retained our commitment to "people–to–people" empowerment work.

Through our Start–A–Library Program, S.E.E.D.S. volunteers and partners have distributed over 100,000 thousand quality books for all ages, to over 150 schools, communities and villages in all of Ghana’s ten regions as well as on the island of St. Vincent.

In 2006 and 2007 our plan is to fund and arrange for the transport & distribution of 100,000 more books, valued at over $3 million, to a total of five African countries: Ghana, Gambia, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. This will enable us to supply an additional 200 schools, communities and villages with "starter library collections" and to also establish 5 regional library resource centers (LRCs)—one in each country.

HOW DOES S.E.E.D.S. ACQUIRE BOOKS?

In recent years S.E.E.D.S. has established a relationship with the US–based International Book Bank (IBB), an outstanding literacy support organization, specializing in the collection and transshipment of donated books, which maintains and inventory of approximately two million new books.

WE ALREADY HAVE BOOKS...BUT WE DO NEED MONEY!

S.E.E.D.S. already has access to many high quality books. However, we do need approximately $15,000 per shipment to defray the logistics, ocean transport, in-country distribution and LRC costs. This is a great socio–economic value to the thousands of people in hundreds of schools, communities and villages which receive the donated books.

Beyond dollar value and numbers of people reached, we have realized that service and the goodwill generated through this work are priceless.

Note: IBB analyses indicate that the books comprising "typical 20,000–volume shipments would retail in the U.S. for more than $650,000.
